In response to a previous comment I want to talk a little bit about taxes. April 15th was just around the corner and one of the main issues that relate to immigration is about taxes.

Most people make a generalized stero-type that no immigrants pay taxes. This is completely false. Yes there are some immigrants who cheat the system and not pay taxes but aren’t there Americans that do the same.

In our own school I have found many students who are “illegal.” They were brought over with there parents and really had no idea what was going on. There familes and themselves are trying as hard as they can to live the “American dream”. Four out of the six students i talked to have jobs and get paid on a payroll just like everyone else. These students do pay taxes. I asked for proof. I wanted to see it for myself. They were kind enough to show me their tax papers and there parents tax papers. I asked each person for their w-4 paper work and how they had gotten jobs. Instead of using a social security numbers some businesses accept IRS numbers/cards to allow people just like them to get taxes deducted and to apply to get there tax dollars back.

My main point in this post is to try to make it more understanding that there is a good in bad in everyone and everything. When there is a will there is a way and no matter what type of paper or no paper at all anyone can cheat the system so it’s just not the illegal immigrants.

What does BOOKER think?

When asked “What is the first thing you think of when you hear the work immigration” this is what 50 students at Booker High school had to say:

* Mexicans (20)

* Mexico (18)

* I dont care, they dont mean anything to me (6)

* Let the people who have been here a long time and have jobs, be able to apply for citizenship.  They have struggled enough, we are a free land and having people especially kids who had come over with there parents unaware and under no understanding of what they are doing have no future ahead of them is not being a free land.

* Send them all back. We dont need them.

* If you dont pay taxes you shouldnt be able to live here and you should be sent back to whereever you had come from.

* Let them stay and give them opportunities.  No one here wants to do the work they are doing.

* Being an illegal immigrant, I think they should allow us especially since i have been here a long time a chance to become a citizen and feel like I am actually a person instead of some number in a poll.

* Boats, floats, white vans, police.

How do you feel about these answers?  Do you agree with any of them?  Do you have your own opinion?

What is Immigration?

Immigration refers to the movement of people between countries. While the movement of people has existed throughout human history at various levels, modern immigration implies long-term, legal, permanent residence. Short-term visitors and tourists are considered non-immigrants . Immigration across national borders in a way that violates the immigration laws of the destination country is termed illegal immigration. Under this definition, an illegal immigrant is a foreigner who either illegally crossed an international political border, be it by land, water, or air, or a foreigner who legally entered a country but nevertheless overstays his/her visa in order
